UK Schools, Universities Asked to Invent Computer Programme That Will Benefit the World

PA Consulting Group, a company specialising in IT management is partnering with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, creator of the Raspberry Pi in issuing a challenge to schools, universities and businesses in the UK to invent a computer programme that will benefit the world.

The invention could, for example, benefit the environment, enable the delivery of better care for others or make information more readily available or secure. Teams of up to six members will show their programming skills together with the Raspberry Pi and are allowed a budget of £50. They may use a limited amount of additional hardware, and any software modules must be available as a source code.

The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into a TV and keyboard. It has many desktop PC capabilities such as spreadsheets, word processing, games and high definition video.

The competition was launched in response to a decline in programming skills. It aims to increase the numbers of skilled coders, developers and engineers in the UK. It is hoped that the knowledge gained from the project will contribute to close the talent gap in this field.

Winning schools are set to receive £1,000, while undergraduates and IT professionals win a salaried internship with the PA Consulting Group.
